London-founded haircare brand built around the principle that effective products should never compromise on safety. Co-founded in 2010 by Rachael Twumasi-Corson and Joycelyn Mate — both of whom experienced hair loss and scalp eczema from chemical relaxers — Afrocenchix began with a single handmade scalp oil, Soothe, which sold out at a local fair and grew into a full Afro and curly haircare range. Rachael is a UCL alumna (MSc Medical Anthropology), having studied there while building the business. Every formula is made with at least 95% naturally derived vegan ingredients and contains no sulphates, silicones, parabens, artificial fragrances, or drying alcohols; the range uses organic fair-trade shea butter sourced from Ghana and is manufactured in South Africa to pharmaceutical-grade standards. Afrocenchix made history as the first British Afro haircare brand to enter a major UK retailer (Whole Foods), and now ships to over 54 countries. Note: the brand underwent a pre-pack sale in 2023 following difficulties faced by the founders; co-founder Rachael Twumasi-Corson departed in October 2023 and is no longer involved with the company. The products remain CGM-friendly and formulations appear unchanged under new ownership.
